Industry Entities & Roles
What is a record label?
A record label is a company or brand that owns or licenses the masters to your recorded music and manages their production, distribution, marketing, and promotion.
Note: You must secure clear, written rights from every performer and composer before release.
What is a sub-label (imprint)?
An imprint is a trademarked subsidiary brand under a parent label, used to target specific genres or market niches while leveraging the parent’s infrastructure.
Note: Imprints help you build a dedicated audience within a specific musical style.
What is a music publisher?
A music publisher administers songwriters’ copyrights—licensing compositions, collecting mechanical, performance, and sync royalties, and distributing them to writers.
Note: Publishing covers the song (lyrics + melody), not the master recording.
What is a distributor?
A distributor delivers your masters and metadata to digital retailers and streaming services (DSPs) without owning the copyrights.
Note: You retain ownership; the distributor simply “pushes” your music to platforms.
What is a DSP (Digital Streaming Platform)?
A DSP is an online store (iTunes, Amazon Music) or streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube Music) where listeners buy or stream your music.
Note: Your distributor handles all technical feeds so you appear automatically.
What is a PRO (Performance Rights Organization)?
PROs (e.g., SIAE, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) collect and pay out performance royalties whenever your compositions are broadcast, streamed, or performed live.
Note: Register each composition with your local PRO to ensure you’re paid for public performances.
What is an MCN (Multi-Channel Network)?
An MCN partners with YouTube channels to provide verification, advanced monetization, content optimization, and rights management across multiple channels.
Note: Useful if you manage several artist/label YouTube channels.
Who qualifies as a contributor?
Anyone involved in creating a track—writers, performers, producers, remixers, featured artists, etc.
Note: List every contributor and their exact role in your metadata to avoid royalty disputes.
What distinguishes an executive producer from a music producer?
An executive producer funds and directs the overall project, while a music producer handles arrangements, sessions, mixing, and mastering.
Note: Secure signed agreements for both roles to clarify rights and splits.
What is a music producer?
A music producer (also called a beatmaker or arranger) crafts melodies, oversees recording sessions, and supervises mixing and mastering.
Note: Their work forms part of the master rights—get a signed production agreement.
What’s the difference between distribution and publishing administration?
– Distribution: Delivers your masters to DSPs and digital retailers.
– Publishing Admin: Licenses and collects royalties on your compositions.
Note: We offer both under one roof for seamless management.
Rights & Licensing
What constitutes a sound recording (master)?
A sound recording is the fixed audio performance of a musical work, protected by copyright separate from the composition.
Note: Masters can be owned by artists, producers, or labels and licensed for exploitation.
What are composition (publishing) rights?
Composition rights cover the underlying song (lyrics + melody)—owned by writers and administered by publishers.
Note: Track these separately from master rights for full royalty collection.
What are mechanical rights/royalties?
Mechanical rights allow reproduction of a composition on CD, vinyl, downloads, or streams.
Note: Mechanical royalties accrue each time a copy is made or streamed.
What are performance royalties?
Performance royalties are earned when a composition is publicly performed (radio, TV, live venues, streaming).
Note: Collected by PROs, not distributors.
What are neighboring rights?
Neighboring rights generate royalties when sound recordings (not compositions) are broadcast or performed publicly.
Note: You often must register separately with local collection societies.
What are synchronization (sync) rights?
Sync rights cover both the permission and the royalties needed to use music with visuals.
Note: Our team can pitch your catalog to ad agencies, filmmakers, and game developers.
Can I release covers or remixes?
Only with a valid license from the original rights holders—proof of clearance is required before distribution.
Note: Unlicensed covers or samples can lead to takedowns and withheld royalties.
What are instrumental releases?
Versions of songs without vocals, tailored for DJs, karaoke, and licensing markets.
Note: Label metadata as “instrumental” to avoid confusion.
What is audio fingerprinting?
Generating a unique “fingerprint” of a track’s waveform to identify it across uploads and broadcasts.
Note: Powers Content ID, Shazam, and similar services.
Rights Enforcement & Claims
How does YouTube Content ID work?
Content ID is YouTube’s fingerprinting system that scans uploads against your registered masters/compositions, letting you monetize, block, or track unauthorized uses.
Note: Enroll your catalog to auto-claim or share ad revenue on fan uploads.
What is a sound recording claim?
A claim on a master to monetize or block unauthorized streams/uploads across platforms.
Note: Fingerprint your masters for full usage control.
What is a composition claim?
A claim on the underlying song when its melody or lyrics are used, even with different instrumentation.
Note: Register compositions with PROs and digital-fingerprinting services.
If I see someone else uploaded my audio/video, what can you do?
We’ll file DMCA takedowns or Content ID claims across DSPs and UGC platforms to remove unauthorized copies.
Note: We track each notice until compliance is confirmed.
How do you manage takedowns under conflicting laws?
We file country-specific DMCA or local-equivalent notices, escalate via counsel, and track compliance in our dashboard.
Note: Differing “fair use” laws can extend timelines.
Identifiers & Registration
What are ISRCs and UPCs?
– ISRC: Unique code for each recording (12 characters).
– UPC/EAN: Unique code for each release (album or single).
Note: We generate and embed both so your music is globally trackable.
What is an IPI number?
An IPI (Interested Party Information) number uniquely identifies songwriters, composers, and publishers for royalties.
Note: We can apply for your IPI once your documents are ready.
Can you give me an ISWC?
Yes—we can register an ISWC for your composition, but only if all contributors have IPI numbers.
Note: An ISWC is required by PROs to track royalties worldwide.
What is partiture (sheet music)?
Partiture, or sheet music, is a written or printed representation of a musical composition—typically in PDF format—showing the notes, lyrics, and arrangement for performance or publication.
Note: We require the partiture file when registering your composition rights with PROs (Performance Rights Organizations), as it serves as the official documentation of the song.
What is a copyright registration service?
A service that submits your works to official bodies (e.g., U.S. Copyright Office, EUIPO) for legal protection.
Note: Registration is costly but provides the strongest infringement remedies.
How do I legally protect my artist name or logo?
Trademark registration protects your name or logo from being used by others in a similar commercial context.
Note: Search for existing trademarks first, then register via official bodies (e.g., USPTO, EUIPO). We can assist with this process through our partner agencies.
Someone else is using the same artist name as me—what can I do?
If your name isn’t trademarked, others can legally use it too.
Note: To prevent conflicts or impersonation, you should trademark your artist name. We can assist with the trademark registration process through our partner agencies.
Commitments, Splits & Advances
What commitments must I make?
You grant exclusive distribution & collection rights, ensure all content is licensed, and provide no unlicensed samples or AI-generated music.
Note: Exclusivity avoids conflicts and maximizes your royalty share.
What revenue split do you apply?
You retain 70% of net royalties; we keep 30% (adjustable by catalog size, services, PRO fees, and add-ons).
Note: Larger catalogs or longer commitments can unlock better splits.
Can I split royalties with my songs’ collaborators automatically?
Yes—enter each contributor’s percentage in our dashboard, and we embed splits in every royalty report.
Note: Accurate splits at upload prevent later corrections.
If someone else wants to share royalty splits with me, do you collect them?
Yes—if the track is released through our platform, we handle split royalties automatically according to the percentages set in our system.
Note: If the track is distributed elsewhere, we first need to verify the other distributor’s policies and systems before confirming whether we can collect your share.
Do you offer advance payments?
Yes—qualified artists can request advances against future royalties; additional advances require catalog performance proof.
Note: Advances recoup before routine payouts resume.
What is recoupment?
Recoupment is the process by which any advances or fees we pay you are recovered from your earned royalties.
Note: Advances recoup before net-royalty payouts resume.
How do you recoup advances?
We deduct paid advances from your monthly or quarterly royalty statements until fully repaid.
Note: Once recouped, you receive 100% of net royalties.
What is tax-withholding compliance?
We deduct and report required withholding taxes (per treaties) on royalties to non-resident artists.
Note: A valid tax-residence certificate is sufficient for Italian companies.
Can I license stems or vocals separately?
Technically yes, but we generally advise against it. If you wish to proceed, please call us for guidance.
Note: Stem licenses require individual clearances and fee structures.
Distribution & Delivery
How long does distribution take?
Once you submit all audio files and metadata, most stores go live in 24–72 hours; some smaller outlets may take up to a week.
Note: Submit at least one week before your target date for marketing lead time.
Which stores and streaming platforms will my music appear on?
Over 200 DSPs and digital retailers worldwide—from Spotify and Apple Music to TikTok and Beatport.
Note: You choose exactly where and when to deliver.
Can I choose specific DSPs or platforms?
Yes—you decide exactly which DSPs, digital retailers, and social platforms receive your release.
Note: Disabling unwanted endpoints helps avoid automated takedowns.
Can I disable delivery to Meta (Facebook/Instagram)?
Absolutely—you can deselect Facebook Stories, Instagram Reels, and other Meta endpoints to prevent Rights Manager removals.
Note: Opt out if you want zero risk of automated deletions.
Why might Meta remove my posts?
Meta’s Rights Manager fingerprinting may auto-delete unlicensed uses—disabling Meta delivery removes this risk.
Note: Each Meta service enforces its own strike thresholds—review their guidelines.
What do you need for transfer of my catalogue?
Full metadata, audio files, and artwork—no need to supply your old ISRCs or UPCs.
Note: We reassign new codes and preserve your stream counts automatically.
Can I switch distributors without losing play counts?
Yes—by migrating your masters and metadata properly, we preserve play counts and playlist placements on most DSPs.
Note: Provide your previous distributor’s release IDs for a seamless transition.
Can I get a Vevo channel?
Yes—once you have official releases, we can apply for a Vevo channel on your behalf.
Note: Approval is per-release and not guaranteed.
Can I use a stage name or must it match my legal name?
Release under any stage name; we only need legal names for contracts and royalty paperwork.
Note: Public metadata will display your chosen artist name.
Can I monetize AI-generated music?
Absolutely no—currently, due to the nature of machine learning, which often involves training on existing copyrighted catalogs, there are significant risks of conflict in both composition and sound recording rights.
Note: U.S. Copyright Office currently does not protect works made entirely by AI without human authorship, and many DSPs are actively removing AI-generated content pending rights clarification.
I see tracks on my profile that aren’t mine, or my tracks appear under the wrong artist profile. What should I do?
This happens due to name conflicts or metadata mismatches on DSPs.
Note: We can assist with relocating your releases to the correct profile and preventing future misplacements.
Account Issues & DSP Policies
If my DSP account is suspended, what can you do?
Our 24/7 support engages DSP reps, submits expedited appeals, and sets up interim revenue-holding accounts until reinstatement.
Note: You also choose which DSPs continue receiving new releases.
When can my profile be terminated on DSPs?
Profiles may be terminated if you violate platform policies—e.g., three strikes on YouTube, two on Spotify, or three on SoundCloud.
Note: Each DSP has its own strike thresholds—review their community guidelines carefully.
What documentation do you require?
– Signed rights-owner agreements with all contributors
– Proof of exclusive rights (contracts, assignment letters)
Note: Upload everything before submission to avoid delays.

Note: Non-compliant files are rejected—and we can assist with minor replacements while preserving stream counts.
Can I replace my audio/video after release?
What if I find a metadata error months after release?
Submit a metadata-correction request; we push updates to DSPs and reconcile uncollected royalties in the next cycle.
Note: Retroactive fixes can take one full reporting period.
How do I submit lyrics and credits?
Enter your lyrics in the designated lyrics field during upload; we deliver them to any DSP that supports lyrics display.
Note: Accurate, time-coded lyrics ensure proper fan engagement and royalty allocation.
What is Musixmatch?

What is YouTube Shorts monetization?
What is audiobook distribution, and do you offer it?
Delivering spoken-word content through Audible, Apple Books, and libraries—each with separate rights and royalties.
